Andy Hawk & The Train Wreck Endings - Another Storyline

The familiar and likable sound of Andy Hawk and his Train Wreck Endings makes a welcome return in the form of this, the band’s third studio album. Managing to combine rockabilly, folk and blues in equal measure, all the ingredients that made their previous releases such a success are all here in abundance. Hawk’s ever so slightly flawed vocals are more than complemented by a band that sounds like it could have been plucked straight from Bourbon Street. The somewhat slow and thoughtful "Baltimore" opens proceedings before the heavy blues sound of "Down So Long" provides a chipper interlude, despite the dark theme. "Another Storyline" has a summary feel to it with its to-tapping chords and pleasant harmonies thanks to the backing vocals of Emma Rowley and the marching beat of "Sunshine Street" reaches a crescendo of guitar and banjo as the song lives up to its positively named title. Like most of Hawk’s work to date It’s not all stomping anthems and sing-along lyrics, "Icicle in the Sun" mourns the passing of a good friend and is a fitting tribute.
With many bands that put themselves in the folk-rock and blues category the music can become samey and repetitive. This release, like the previous two does a great job of stepping aside from the rest and illustrates what can be achieved thanks to some great song writing and top class musicianship.

Kotadama - Dichotomy

With the long list of global accolades that have followed their various musical releases to date, Australian sibling duo and pop/rock outfit Kotadama may be forgiven for feeling a little pressure with this their debut album release. After tinkering with international ballroom dancing and dabbling in the stock market in past ventures, these brothers now have global domination firmly in their sights in the form of “Dichotomy”. Following EP and single releases in 2009, Evan and Chris Brown have seen their music featured on a number of radio stations and press outlets around the world. “See You Tonight” was elevated to the lofty heights of number one requested song by the listeners of New York’s Kiss FM for a total of eight weeks and has featured in a string of band contests and seen them invited to a number of conferences and workshops for new artists from Japan to New Zealand and London to Canada. With “Dichotomy” they deliver eleven tracks of the distinctive electronic pop, soft rock hybrid which the brothers Brown have made their own as their musical style has grown up with them. They have also recruited renowned producer David Kershenbaum, he of Duran Duran and Bryan Adams fame, which can only be seen as a statement of intent in terms of where the guys want to go in the future. Along with the previously mentioned standout single “See You Tonight”, which makes a re-appearance here, “Endure” maintains the brooding and slightly haunting theme that forms the backdrop to this album throughout its entirety. Tracks such as “Earth Vs Man” and “As I Am” appear to wistfully lament lost love and insecurity whilst offering a middle finger like gesture of defiance to all concerned, with Chris describing the former as “a warning to mankind”. The atmospheric ballad, “Time and Tide” shows off the duos ability to sound like there are a lot more in the band than there actually are, mainly due to a powerful guitar spine tempered with sparkling keyboard accompaniment.
There is genuine musical ability here, song-writing obviously comes naturally to these brothers who have been producing lyrics since day one and they are able to use powerful and emotive words to create decent pop songs. “Dichotomy” at times cries out for a little diversity though as some of the tracks are in danger of becoming a little one dimensional. Whether the ballad nature of most of the songs makes for a full-length album rather than an EP is debatable and will not be everyone’s cup of tea, though what is not up for debate is the raw talent this pair have to offer. The future looks bright for Chris and Evan and following this release they plan to head to The States and continue their work with David Kershenbaum. Hopefully the boys aren’t tempted back to the ballroom or lured by potential riches of Wall Street and return with a follow-up second album, as you get the feeling that like a good Aussie Chardonnay, Kotadama’s music is improving with age.

Brad Hammonds - Code of a Mad Man

Those sensing a familiar sound to some of the tracks here may be forgiven as New York singer, songwriter and guitar guru, Brad Hammonds has combined some previously released and re-arranged titles with brand new material for this, his latest album.
The moody but melodic strains that have made his previous recordings so distinctive run deep once again despite this being a solo project following his successful Shoulders of Giants venture with Tom Crowley in 2010. The new tracks dovetail seamlessly with the revived pieces and still maintain that trademark Hammonds sound, mostly due to his distinctive guitar style, though this time with a more gritty feel thanks to his more industrial but organic vocal style. The polished production of "She's in Love" mean this track is always a highlight in any album and the picking guitar style and haunting vocals of title track “Code of a Mad Man” sound as good as ever. “Above the Crowd” illustrates the direction Hammonds has gone since writing alone with a slow starting yet carefully constructed combination of guitar, percussion and bass with the help of old cohorts Jason Di Matteo and Dave Wilkie, the song reaches a natural crescendo before fading gently into the distance. “Everyone Will Be a star” shows the ability of Hammonds to mix light and dark, with an tongue in cheek look at reality television in modern culture, even more ironic as some of his previous work has been used on a number of top rating reality TV shows. The curtain is brought down by the uplifting "Your prayers”, which incorporates the subtle use of cello that only goes to enhance the piercing sound of acoustic guitar which Hammonds appears to thrash out effortlessly yet still at a thunderous pace. The growing number of fans that have followed this New York performer, through bands such as Brazz Tree and Shoulders of Giants will not be disappointed with his latest efforts and will also be pleased to see that despite sailing the ship alone once again he is still able to produce the goods with a suggestion there is more to come.

The Mercers - Giant

Those who are familiar with The Mercers' 2007 offering Pretty Things Walk may detect a slightly more melodic sound to this new release from the Texan four piece, but like a top of the range vehicle slipping from off road setting to two wheel drive mode the transition is pretty seamless and performance is not compromised. The sandpaper like vocals of Peter Wagner keeps things on the raw side, though with tracks such as “Abattoir” there is a slight swerve towards a more commercial sound which offers a pleasant shift in mood. With only seven tracks on offer Giant sits somewhere between an EP and an LP but the versatility and variation within the songs, including the seven minute epic “Gamblers” listeners will not feel short changed.

The sound of grinding guitar right from the off heralds the arrival of the new album from The Purrs. This is their sixth release in total and there is a definite underground retro feel to the music of this Seattle based four- piece with mood and feeling taking preference over melody or hook. The guitar duo of Jason Milne and Bob Silverton must have wrists of steel such is the non-stop nature of the jangly guitar sound which nicely tempers the more monotone voice of lead vocalist and bassist Jima. Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Fall, comparisons can be made with all due to the distinctive guitar heavy feel, but make no mistake, the formula is tried and tested and will always have its place in music, a point backed up the fact that The Purrs have now been going strong for ten years.

Following the bar room tales of Tin Can Town, Virginia’s Andy Hawk and the Train Wreck Endings hit the road for their new release, embarking on something of a road trip for the senses. “Another Road Side Attraction”, is described by Hawk as “a 12 song collection that feels like a car trip around The USA with stops along the way at some of the country's quirkiest freak shows”. Hawk doesn’t describe his vehicle of choice but just listening to the music it would have to be a slightly ageing Chevy with a throaty exhaust and more than the odd story to tell. As with his previous work Hawk’s songs reflect the highs and lows of everyday life and this offering is no different with the mood rising up then dipping down before going up again, like a well worn axel on a road riddled with pot holes. The record gets off to a flying start with the energetic sound of the album’s title track “Another Road Side Attraction”, with references to Strippers on Highway 51, coolers and meeting Elvis the monkey. Songs such as “My My” and “New Orleans” allow the journey to mosey gently round corners whilst the passengers recharge their batteries before the pedal hits the metal once more with “Lipstick and Dynamite”. Despite the quirkiness of the songs there is meaning behind each of them all sung with a superb razor blade like voice and the jazz, blues, folk sound only benefiting and being enhanced by the use of saxophone, electric guitar, piano and keyboards. If you are planning a road trip anytime soon this album should be on the list of essentials, along with the cooler and just ahead of the strippers.

Fear not fans of the jingle-jangle guitar based bedroom pop of Kissing Party. After nearly two years they are back with their new release, The Hate Album which goes some way to prove they are more than powder puff pop. Blink and you might miss some of the gems within the surprisingly long list of 15 tracks, as all but two of them are timed at less than 3 minutes in length, ideal for today’s shuffle happy generation. The vocals of Deirdre Sage and the guitars of Gregg Dolan along with Joe Hansen on guitar, Lee Evans on bass and Shane Reid on drums, work in harmony as songs of everyday melancholy are brought to life with the musical equivalent of a sprig of mint in a jug of Pimms.

Fans of his ferocious guitar playing, imaginative lyrics and ability to create a cacophony of sounds with apparent ease will be delighted to hear that Brad Hammonds’ new incarnation, Shoulders of Giants, maintains all the elements that made his first solo album such a success. In a move that re-enforces his ability to combine meaningful words with uplifting sounds Hammonds has recruited the voice of New York based guitarist and vocalist Tom Crowley, an addition that gives depth to the music as well as perspective to the lyrics. Opening with “Code of a Mad Man”, a two minute masterpiece which not only introduces the listener to the haunting vocals of Crowley and how they gel with the riveting guitar of Hammonds, it also sets the stage for the hypnotic and rhythmic performance that is to follow. The delightfully chipper “I Feel awake Whilst Dreaming” shows off the majestical chemistry between the two as the guitars work in tandem seamlessly. The darker side of Hammonds as a song writer is never far away and this is evident in “Fade Away” with lines such as, “What doesn’t kill us makes us weaker, so we won’t choose”. The catchy, ballad like, “She’s in Love”, is the album’s crown jewel and is just made for listening to whilst cruising down an open road on a summer evening. With bitter-sweet lyrics of loving and losing Crowley has the perfect opportunity to show off his vocal talents and prove just why he was the man for this job, a chance which he does not let pass him by. The guitar harmony is backed up by a supporting cast of Dave Wilkie on drums and Marika Hughes playing Cello along with a bass duo of Ben Bell and Jason DiMatteo, whose use of both electric and upright between them offers yet more versatility. This release manages to strip music back to the bare bones whilst still managing to create a myriad of melodies, rhythm, harmony and feeling, using the key ingredients of strings, percussion and most importantly good old fashioned talent. Shoulders of Giants is a project of progression rather than a complete transformation, something which we should be glad, because as the saying goes, if it aint broke, don’t fix it.

Describing themselves as "Gothic Americana meets The Andrews sisters" and with "lyrics that range from the absurd to the sublime", mostly the former, you may think that there is a little too much going on with this New York based all female three-piece and you may be right. The lyrics attempt to be witty and clever and are backed up by a range of musical instruments that Hickies would be proud of, Accordion, keys, hobo drums, violin, ukulele and trumpet to name a few. There is genuine musical talent here, of that there is no doubt and a natural ability, as well as desire, to perform but the concern is that all of this may threaten to override the content.

Adam Palmer and The Specialest - Lights

According to the blurb “Lights” was written whilst Adam Palmer was in the Canadian wilderness trying to cope with a failing relationship. I t would appear he threw himself into his work in order to take his mind off the heartache with an album that utilizes synthesizers, acoustic strings, banjo and a multitude of interesting sounding items. Whether Palmer’s voice, which graced Eleazer VS John’s debut album, Pits in the Sandblaster in 2009, can compete with the musical experimentation taking place underneath is debatable, but the meaning and sentiment behind the 12 electronically charged folk offerings is not in doubt.

Freak Owls - Taxidermy

The latest creation of musical nomad Josh Riccio, Freak Owls, have released their new album Taxidermy. A band named after feathered creatures and a title describing a hobby which involves stuffing them, no pun required. Josh has spent the past 12 years plying his trade with the likes of Pela and Ladycop and was able to rely on his mates in the industry when it came to getting his latest work released. Catchy acoustic numbers litter the album creating an up-beat vibe for the most part. Riccio’ ability to combine melody and vocal harmony means this collection of songs is easy on the ear as well as repetitive on the brain, as you might find yourself humming tracks such as “Hey, Na, Na, Na” without even knowing it. As so often with acoustic/folk there can be a sting in the tail and this is no exception. In this case it is the slightly more lumpy “Belles” and “Place to Be”.

Vaus - The Floating Celebration

San Francisco conjures up many images, The Golden Gate Bridge, cars winding through tree lined Lombard Street, the waves crashing against the rocks of Alcatraz, but if there is one that appears time and time again it is of grainy TV footage showing students and the generally young at heart with flowers in their hair and goodness knows what flowing through their veins. “San Francisco”, from the album The Floating Celebration is the musical equivalent of that very image. Yes, it might only be one song from a colection of ten by Vaus, real name Lyn Juhl Vaus, but it is a microcosm of the sound and indeed theme produced by the Danish born, Iran educated Californian University drop-out who now resides in Los Angeles after stints in Belgium and milking cows in Connecticut. For someone who appears to have much to say about a colourful life and an articulate way of saying it, it may be surprising that the longest track on offer is only just over four minutes in length, but the work of Vaus is definitely one for the dreamers amongst us, or those who just wish to pull the covers over their head on a grey day and escape the real world for thirty two and a half minutes.

Temposhark - Threads

Just when you thought the synth revival that has made such an impression on the charts recently had run its course, along comes Temposhark with their second album Threads. In all honesty to pigeonhole this release as purely keyboard pop is deceiving as there is a wide variety of genres and styles within the eleven tracks, mirroring the assortment of emotions. Such is the contrast from the likes of the glam sounding “Irresistible” to the thumping beat of “Bye Bye Baby” you may be slightly confused as to which album or artist you are listening to. The brainchild and lead singer Robert Diament collaborates with producer Sean McGhee, who has worked with the likes of Sugababes and Britney Spears to create a sound akin to Marc Almond, Savage Garden and The Hoosiers sharing the microphone in a mass SingStar session in the early hours at a very lively house party. “Cold” is more along the lines of a classic ballad, breaking the electro theme that runs deep. “Green Lights” also slows the pace, using a violin solo like a driver using the gears to reduce the speed of their vehicle, whilst “Stuck” offers a nod and a wink of nervous twitch proportions to Jason Timberlake in his prime. The bad tempered, yet witty “The World Does Not Revolve Around You” was chosen as a single and you can see why with its spiteful lyrics backed by a sing a long beat. Anyone doubting sincerity and depth are directed to “The Last Time I saw Matthew”, a vocal and piano epic, which brings the album to a surprisingly gentle close. The writing is clever but simple and musically there are more turns than Lombard Street. One concern may be the ability of the senses to adjust. Anyone who has ever stepped into a steaming hot bath on a freezing cold day will know just what this means.

Forget the terms kitsch, ironic, retro or any other it would seem are obligatory in such sentences, this new single from Reading based trio The Colours embraces all that is worth celebrating about pop music. With an undeniable yet unashamed 80s sound and a slight nod to the likes of Howard Jones, “Tonight I Let You Go” is packed with energy and vigour. With a tempo and beat that would have even the most gout ridden of toes tapping, the lyrics offer a lament to a broken relationship, providing the bitter-sweet twist which is the requirement of so many decent songs. Described by the artist as an album that sounds like you are scanning through stations or hitting shuffle on a multi CD changer, it is difficult to disagree or come up with a better description than that of with James B. White himself. Opening up with an instrumental is always a risk but in the case of "It Didn't Move So I Ate it", it purely sets the scene for the unorthodox musical journey which you are about to embark. The ten songs of varying length, style and genre are knitted together like a patchwork quilt, "Walnut Hill" was apparently penned for the end title sequence in a college film and maybe should have brought the curtain down on this release, however it finds itself floating three tracks from the end. An interesting array of individual projects rather than an album that flows from beginning to end, none the less there are some decent tunes to be found.

Blue Pontiac - Welcome to the Great Recession

Like a flickering flame amongst the ruins of the Michigan car industry Blue Pontiac offer their services as a phoenix from the ashes with their poignantly named release Welcome to the Great Recession. The husband and wife duo, who have taken the motor town to their hearts since relocating from the east coast are feeling the pain of the city as if it were their own. Not surprisingly this is something which is reflected in their work, starting from the outset with the album’s title track. Despite lyrics of lament, an up-beat nouveau country/blue grass sound emanates through tracks such as "Black Friday" and "In the Land of the Lost" and the connection with the city and its ravaged motor industry comes through when listening to "Second Shift". Though the subject matter of most of the songs is dour the nature of the arrangement is not. As with folk music throughout history it stems from communities on their knees producing a sound intending to get people on their feet. It would seem Blue Pontiac fully intend to keep this tradition alive in the 21st century.

Golden Hours - Pioneering/Wash The Night Eyes

If you think it’s been a while since you heard from The Wookies that is because they are now Golden Hours. Re-named, re-branded but still comprising the original line-up the Berkshire band intend to carry on where they left off and hit the ground running with this double A-side. Admitting themselves that their sound has progressed from what it once was the five now ooze angst whilst maintaining grace and style. Gnashing guitar gives way to tickled ivory, raw vocal makes room for subtle percussion, a cacophony of sound but in proportion, enabling an epic feel to run throughout. "Pioneering" is the more thunderous offering whilst "Wash the Night Eyes" is the slightly more tepid, yet no less powerful alternative. Sentinel - For Days Deep

Containing only seven tracks, just two of which over four minutes long, For Days Deep sets its stall out from the get-go to pack a punch with a sound that transports you back to an era of painted Doc Marten boots, striped leggings and floppy crimped fringes. Comparisons to bands of that time have been rife according to the Oakland outfit, My Bloody Valentine, Primitives and certainly more than a hint of The Cocteau Twins. Despite the similarities there is a unique sound here and as with many three-pieces the result can be dependent on the relationship between vocal and guitar. Dennis Bestafka’s playing style is powerful and Edge like if a little rougher at the corners. Tarabud’s voice is melodic yet at the same time monotone but together they work in tandem like a musical version of Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch.

Killing Phantoms - Heroes Night

Phuong Nguyen has been writing and performing under different guises since he was 14 and has now returned to team up with New York based outfit Killing Phantoms for this, their second album. Nguyen combines his mellow yet true vocals with the music of his piano, organ, accordion and cello playing friends to produce a record that drifts along rather gently at times. Though the lustful piano ballad style of "Only Ghosts" and the dreamy, acoustic jam session feel of "Did You Try" are met full in the face in an almost schizophrenic yet welcome change of tempo by the grinding guitar of "Jetlag" and "Last Man Standing". The diverse range of sounds and melodies that can be heard throughout the twelve tracks of Heroes Night can lead you to believe you are listening to more than just the one album, bargain!

She’s Relatively Sexy is the first album from this 1970s inspired, vintage retro outfit from Melbourne. "I wasn't even born in that era, but I've always had a thing for 70s cheese," explains front man and keyboardist John Nelder and this is evident when listening to the distinct sound of this Aussie three- piece. The genre is most definitely in the quirky envelope but the guys have proved that clever and quirky doesn’t necessarily mean a lack of depth. The arrangement of the ten songs mean that the tracks are more mini power-pop operas than three minute pop hits, mostly thanks to the effective use of keys and the occasional synth electric guitar solo, backed up by some meaningful yet light hearted lyrics. It would be easy to say that the style is ironic, some would say more tongue in cheek self depreciation, no better illustrated by the opening track “The Fame I so Deserve”, with the line, “Now you’ll find me lying in the corner of the record store in the bargain bin”. Don’t let the large collars and polyester trousers fool you, there is genuine musical talent here. Sense of Scenery - The Disaster of Imagination

The debut LP from Vancouver’s Sense of Scenery has finally hit the shelves, or is available for download at least. The man at the helm, Sean Douglas (Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Synth, Synthetic Percussion and just about anything else) claims he has a hard time remembering when he started work on the album, “It has probably taken me the better part of two years although I likely started writing in 2006, who knows?” After technical difficulties meant the process became more like three years and four months the wait is finally over. A cacophony of guitar, bass and drums gives The Disaster of Imagination more than a hint of early nineties grunge, mainly thanks to the gravelly voice of Douglas, though some beefy production and the clever introduction of keyboards result in more than a hint of 1980s British pop/new romance. Brighton, MA are a five-piece rock band from Chicago, confused? There is no need to be. The name comes from the New England home town of front man and singer/songwriter Matt Kirstein. Kirstein himself has been around the musical block for what seems years but this outfit has existed in its current form since 2006 and as the years have passed the guys have matured and the music has followed, evolving and improving all the time. Along with Kerstin, Jim Tuerk (guitar), Sam Koentopp (drums), Joe Darnaby (guitar) and Jon Osaksut (Bass) combine to bring us Amateur Lovers , a classic piece of psychedelic folk rock. Don’t let the slow, ballad like start of “Let’s Be Friends Again” fool you as there is a steady and unstoppable momentum which builds throughout the album, thanks to the likes of the energetic “Not Our Fault” and “Hold On”. The crescendo is reached with the unstoppable military beat of “Underground”, surely the crown jewel in the collection. Amateur Lovers is a fantastic collection of ten songs which, when intertwined together, resemble a musical silk cocoon or perfectly constructed spider’s web. “Comparisons have been made from everyone from The Fall to Sonic Youth” claims Californian outfit Ovipositor “and while that’s all good it’s not quite right”. They may have a point when it comes to Sonic Youth but the similarity with The Fall is there for all to see, though who would not see that as a compliment? Oakland Minor is the third album from the Oakland three-piece who describe it themselves as,”the soundtrack for the eternal struggle for the perpetual underdog”. A simple, old fashioned combination of guitar, drums and bass results in a wall of sound, more of a traditional English dry-stone wall with large blocks of musical granite pieced together , all of various sizes and textures slotting together seamlessly. The mortar holding it all together is the harsh, yet appropriate vocals of Mark Pino. Growling guitars give way to raging feedback which bows down to a thumping beat and with an attitude to match. Could be described as a grower but certainly worth a try.

Sleep When We Are Dead heralds the arrival of The Organ Beats, a rock n roll/pop/indie hybrid from Boston. With a dynamic mix of powerful melody, crunching guitar riffs and some top notch drumming, the 9 tracks are over in no time but the album is a sweet as it is short. The title track highlights musical ability and superb production making it hard to believe this is only a three-piece. The introduction to “No One Can Tell You” makes interesting use of sampled raindrops set to the sound of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” which sets the scene perfectly before a rock ballad consisting of superb vocals and whining guitar solos kick in. This is a great collection of indie power-pop, lamenting insecurity and depression whilst championing love and optimism, all crammed into just over half an hour.

Steven Deal - Radio Twelve

In the days of C90 cassette tapes the most annoying this about recording one of your favourite albums was having to break it up at some when point in order to squeeze as much as possible onto one side, leaving you with two or three odd tracks on the other side, which would ultimately be ignored. Steven Deal’s Radio Twelve is perfect for those stuck in the tape era or whose car stereo still does not have a CD facility as it comes in just shy of 40 minutes. “Falling to Heaven”, “There’s Only One Person” and “Where I Wanna Be,” are just some of the highlights from the eleven tracks which Deal describes as beer and brandy soaked pop anthems telling stories of romantic misery. Radio Twelve is on the dark side but still maintains a bitter-sweet flavour throughout thanks to its diverse range of musical genres. Deal’s anti-love lyrics are semi-autobiographical but may well ring true to those who may be feeling disaffected or unfulfilled. A good companion on a lonely motorway journey, preferably of around 40 miles or so.

Glamorous, sexy, exciting, funky, all things that people, or at least those from Brighton, like to claim best describes their city and those that reside there, but is it true? Well if Doll and The Kicks are anything to go by then they may have a point. The self titled debut album from Hannah (Doll), Matt, Oliver and Chris, conveys raw passion, cool funk not to mention some rough edges and smooth corners, though to be honest any descriptive is possible and would not seem out of place when trying to find an appropriate tag for such an unique sound.“If You Care” opens and could be seen as the calm before the storm with more of a ballad feel to it yet still belted out at 100mph by Hannah...er Doll, with a hint of the vigour that is to come. This arrives in the form of “Roll Up the Red Carpet", which combines both a funky punk sound and a reggae beat in equal measures, all complementing and providing a superb foundation for a brilliant vocal performance. The album’s thump-o-meter scale is cranked up to 9.5 with 3 minutes and 7 seconds of ferocious drumming and a stonking bass line that is “He Was a Dancer”. “If You’re Gonna Leave” has all the ingredients of a really good pop song and shows off the bands versatility along with “Pictures” which again demonstrates Hannah’s superb vocal range. Doll and the Kicks is an acoustic jewellery box containing some genuine musical gems and should be opened at any opportunity.

Alejandra O'Leary - Nothing Out Loud

Alejandra O’Leary arrived in New York City after leaving off-shore Maine, via Yale University, she now finds herself based in Michigan yet constantly moving around from city to city plying her trade. Nothing Out Loud is her debut album and opens with the up-tempo “Ever After”, in which she laments her relationship woes. A succession of piano and drum based numbers is to follow with more than a hint of 1960s girl group about it, creating something of a retro pop feel at times, no better illustrated than by “Tremor”. The simple, yet powerful “Thinking Straight” is surely the album’s must listen to track, closely followed by “Rally” or “You Gotta Love Me Sometimes”. O’ Leary’s sound is like the musical equivalent of a Formica table, simple yet effective and though representing an era of years gone by, it still manages to maintain a place amongst modern surroundings.

Pastora - Music Minus Film

Pastora is the brainchild and creation of Derek Buckner, he writes, he produces, he plays, there is nothing really that this guy doesn’t do but the resulting sound would have you believe that Music Minus Film is a team effort on a larger scale. 80s synth, 90s trance, a variety of instrumental interludes, it’s all here on this 25 minute melodic merry-go-round. “Can You See Them” sees Buckner combine dark and granite like vocals with a strong, plodding bass line punctuated with an occasional keyboard interjection. This is one of only two tracks to feature vocals of any kind, along with "El Contador". Music Minus Film is certainly more a sprint than a marathon in terms of duration, yet the ability of Buckner to introduce such a vast array of ingredients to the musical taste buds, like a chef not wanting to over-cook the broth maybe it is a case of less equals more.

Porcupine - The Trouble With You

The debut album from Wisconsin’s Porcupine opens with the sound of a train pulling into a station in Austria, a station that the band admit themselves they have never been yet have heard is very nice. It sure is an interesting way of opening an album and heralds the arrival of the first track on The Trouble with You, appropriately entitled “Intro”. A sublime combination of guitar based rock with a funky undertone is to follow. Though a debut album these boys from the mid-west (Casey Virock, David Reindeers and Jeffrey Bahr) are no virgins to the music scene having performed with the likes of Space Bike, Junk Farm and Remover between them. With a sound that makes any kind of genre pigeonholing near enough impossible, it is best just to appreciate the likes of “Books”, “Dark Mood” and “Life Boat” for the truly superb songs that they are. Look out for the guys at a train station near you.

Fresh out of Melbourne comes this new offering from Dion Read and his piano power pop outfit, The After Thoughts. Originally from Queensland before re-locating to Melbourne Read manages to combine thoughtful and meaningful lyrics with superb piano accompaniment. Backed up by strong musicianship from James K Pere on bass and Kyle Goldsworthy on drums the trio who have been together since 2007, bring you quirky stories of love and lust along with everyday dramas, whilst maintaining an upbeat dynamic tempo. After tales of a lovers tiff in the title track “Be Here Right Now” the EP then flits to besotted adulation in the catchy “In the City” before a dose of realism strikes with the final track “Air Balloons”, finishing with the line - I think the best things in life are gonna pass me by, there they go, I don’t put up much of a fight. This is a well produced and superbly performed collection of songs, a new album must surely be in the pipeline.

Andy Hawk & The Train Wreck Endings - Tin Can Town

This is the latest release from Andy Hawk and his relatively new band The Train Wreck Endings and on this evidence Tin Can Town goes a long way to putting rhythm and blues back into R&B. Full of bar-room ballads from start to finish Virginia based Hawk and his band, consisting of Chuck Bordelin on bass, Gary Rudinsky on lead guitar, Brandon Hickman on drums and Steve DeVries on just about everything else, produce a classic American, toe-tapping country sound. From the outset with “Think Too Much”, Hawk’s catchy and sometimes Springsteen like lyrics and powerful guitar combine superbly with DeVries’ strumming on the mandolin. The album progresses like a rock opera set amongst beer drinkers with a back drop of late night eateries, no better illustrated than by the terrific “Real Gone Girl”. There is a real sense of bitter sweet to Hawk’s lyrics with tales of lost love and ruined relationships set to a thundering up tempo sound-track provided by his latest collaborators. The album’s title track talks of a familiar feeling of home town frustration accompanied brilliantly by Schneck on acoustic guitar, whereas "The Last Two in the Bar" is the perfect curtain down for this album, a love song for anyone who has ever worn beer goggles at the end of a long night in the pub. If you like music that tells a tale or simply enjoy some good ole blues, Tin Can Town is for you, a bottle of whiskey whilst listening is optional.

Mark Bodino - No Roads to Juneau

Every base is covered on this, Mark Bodino’s second contemporary studio album. Classic rock, country, folk interjected with the odd ballad or two. The guitarist from New Jersey, who plies his trade performing in the Manhattan and Philadelphia area, applies passion to every pick and strum of his guitar as he produces a sound that invokes memories of the likes of Dave Gilmour or The Eagles. Bodino has performed both as a solo artist and with a band over the years and this comes across in much of his work as he is able to combine raw guitar solos with electric piano, Latin percussion and tenor saxophone. This is no better illustrated than on "To Make You Cry" where his wailing guitar is accompanied by hip-hop rapping. "Stoplight" is for me the highlight of No Roads To Juneau and a real gem proving there is a decent songwriter at work here as well as a performer and master of guitar.

deVries- Death to God

July sees the release of the stunning new album from deVries and just when you thought indie music was something for teens to dance to in student bars and for 30 somethings to hark back to and claim there is nothing like it anymore, along comes Death to God. This is the new project from Turn-ons guitarist and vocalist Travis deVries and there is a lot to like about his latest work. Having recently moved from Seattle to New York he has chopped and changed his band of late, juggling former collaborators with new acquisitions, yet still managing to produce a unique though strangely familiar sound, almost a Stone Roses and Ride hybrid for the new generation. “Darkest Summer” keeps up the Britpop theme with reverberating guitars and vocals that Brett Anderson would be proud of, setting the scene perfectly for what is to come, whilst “Black Thursday Repeat” provides a fantastic and punchy interlude, peppered with both thumping bass and percussion not to mention a killer guitar riff. With titles such as “Broken Heart” and “Wasted Life” there is more than a flirtation with melancholy here, yet never taken to a level that oversteps the mark or becomes uneasy to the listener. “Wherever You Are” is a deep and meaningful ballad and provides conclusive evidence, not that it were needed, of musical and song writing ability throughout, it also brings the curtain down on a fantastic album, leaving you wanting that little bit more, which one can only hope comes in the form of further releases from deVries in the near future.

Simon Fagan - Hired and Fired

Not so much pop but musical theatre best describes this singer/songwriter/performer from Navan. Jazzy riffs and finger clicking beats dove-tail with orchestral production and harmony, along with some mighty fine trumpeting from the man himself on this his debut EP. Fagan has spent much of his life plying his trade in bars, whether it be playing in them or serving in them, something which comes through in the grittiness and reality of some of his songs, but his musical talents can’t be overlooked. A bona fide student of music, Simon has studied at the likes of The Royal Irish Academy, this is evident when listening to his music as there is an overwhelming sense of performance in almost all of his tracks. The toe tapping title track, “Hired and Fired” maybe an autobiographical tale of an inability to hold down regular employment but some fantastic arrangement and strong vocals give an almost West End theatre feel to the song, whilst “Brave the Dance” builds slowly before reaching a crescendo of trumpets and drums leaving you breathless from just listening. Hopefully a full album will follow this superb EP as it is evident that Fagan is a genuine music man with a hell of a lot to offer.

Low-Fi - Where Are You

Jangly mellow-guitar pop with smart lyrics. A brash boast for a band that only formed two years ago maybe, but in the case of this trio from Idaho, it is a case of doing exactly what it says on the packet. Indie music maybe a term that is not used as much as it once was, due to bands wishing to recreate a more retro sound of years gone by, but Where Are You, fills a huge void lacking in the new music scene. Think early REM with a hint of XTC with for a new generation complete with catchy lyrics and dynamic guitar riffs all of which leads you to believe you have heard it before somewhere before. It is the guitar sound which runs deep throughout which creates such a distinctive sound for a debut album. "Goin'On" is one of the stand-out tracks on the album with its powerful opening, drifting effortlessly into mighty fine solos on guitar courtesy of lead guitarist and vocalist Todd Sloan and nice work on the bass and drums by Mike Rundle and Josh Gilmour respectively. Sloan’s vocals were made for this kind of music and no better illustrated than on "1957", though it is difficult to pick highlights from such a complete piece of work. Indie, rock, pop, whatever you want to call it you won’t be disappointed. (MC)

Go Time! - Speak

Speak is a thunderous 14 track rock-fest that shoots straight from the hip, well straight from Chicago actually in the form of four piece Go Time. Officially formed in 2007, though with a new line-up in 2008, Go Time are a group of musical nomads who have come together from various projects dating back almost ten years to produce a fantastic collection of melodic pop, which has more than a hint of retro rock to it. "Wait and See" combines machine gun like drums from Steve Grzenia sublimely with the lead guitar and vocals of Scott Niekelski, whilst "Cost" sounds like it could have been a hit of years gone by with its 60s back beat and whining guitar effects thanks to the guitar of Paul Schmidt and bass of Marko Marketti. For all those who claim that the age of rock and roll is over due to the rise of manufactured groups and boy bands, give Speak a listen, it might just change your opinion.

When Madness made the first of several comebacks during the nineties, front man Suggs joked that they needed to keep touring as royalties never went far between the seven members of the band. This is something that need not worry Beyond From Within brainchild Steve Andrews should he hit the big time with his new album. One man music machine Andrews writes all the material, sings all the songs and still finds time to play guitar, keyboards and drums on his debut release Beyond From Within. There is the inevitable concern for an artist taking on so many tasks not wanting to bite off more than they can chew, but Andrews’ ability to multi-task in all the aforementioned areas enables him to achieve a psychedelic, 70s soft rock sound. A lack of creative input from fellow band members may limit some artists, but this doesn’t appear to be the case with powerful numbers such as “Today, Today”, the first track on the album and the emotive “Picture”. Andrews’ versatility is there for all to see throughout. The simplicity and successful combination of strong vocals and acoustic guitar make “Soul Traveler” and “Eight Card Majesty” the albums highlights and maybe point the way to future success for Andrews as his raw musical talent is thrust into the spotlight above the instrumentation and production proving the age old adage that less is more.

Spacewalk - Evolution Road

When not bouncing between Scotland, Switzerland, Italy and Ghana Spacewalk spend their time producing some atmospheric, funky and catchy tunes. A truly global band in nature as well as sound their eclectic mix of acid jazz, funk and pop works well to create a distinctive and contemporary sound. Incorporating euro pop with African dance music due to a blend of percussion, bass, drums and keyboard, there is certainly something here for everyone. 2009 sees Spacewalk release their fifth studio album Evolution Road, which has brought together artists from South America, Europe and Africa re-enforcing their universal values. Though their carbon footprint may not be something to brag about their air miles account will certainly make touring easier in the coming years.

The Alternates EP

This thunderous new EP from California indie/rock outfit The Alternates hits you straight between the eyes as the boys from Taluca Lake attempt and indeed succeed to replicate their live sound, which has been wowing audiences on the West Coast for some time, onto disc. From the opening number “Changing Course” with its chain saw like guitars and catchy melody you know these boys, who met at high school, mean business and are more than justifying their title of BB King’s Battle of the Bands winners in 2008. The musical ability of this quintet, which features TWO drummers, is obvious throughout the four tracks and lead singer and song collaborator Spencer Livingston has an incredibly mature and strong voice for someone not even in his early twenties. This is no better illustrated than the fantastic “Who can you Trust These Days” which is a melodic sandwich of bitter-sweet lyrics placed between hillbilly guitars with a dark and more murky after taste in the form of a blues solo as the song reaches its crescendo. Having played to full houses in such esteemed venues as The House of Blues and Whiskey A Go Go in recent years there is a large and passionate following for these lads around the California area, as well as an army of fans on Myspace. I believe that if this EP were to gain the exposure it deserves they will no doubt be selling out venues much further afield in the not too distant future. (MC)

Paulina Logan - Wallflower

The problem with the music industry is that everything has to be put into an envelope and be categorised. Fortunately for Paulina Logan this works in her favour as she gets to tick most boxes, acoustic, indie, country, folk, you name it, whilst maintaining a contemporary feel thanks to an electric pop sound which runs through most of her work. Wallflower is Logan’s first full album and takes you from the sunshine of her native California very much into the shadows with songs such as the title track (wallflower) with its dark lyrics and haunting melody or "Fly Away" which is has raw emotion coursing through it from the outset highlighting an impressive vocal range. The tempo is lifted with tracks such as the melodic "Sorry" which has all the makings of a very catchy pop song and "I Hate 3 am" is a rocky and punchy 4 minute 15 second musical experience , complete with funky bass line working nicely with incredibly energetic drums and some well used yet subtle trumpets. Paulina Logan’s ability to combine multiple musical styles with strong and meaningful lyrics and some top-notch, well polished production, result in Wallflower being a listening pleasure and hopefully a taste of things to come for future releases.(MC)

Potential Canadian Pop Princess, Hilary Weaver, plans to release her debut album later in 2009 and “Tell the Next Girl” must surely be considered as a single release. The teenager from Ontario is in the fortunate position to have a well written and superbly performed track in her locker at such an early stage of her career. The song is a full on broadside at an ex-boyfriend whose selfishness and lies have gone a step too far. I don’t know if the song is written from first-hand experience but if Hilary’s potential lives up to this offering the said guy may live to regret his ways. (MC)

Paul Passion

Paul Passion is a musical Jack of all trades and a master of most. He is able to bring together drums, bass, keyboard and guitar to manufacture some catchy reggae tunes. Having settled in London after leaving Kingston, where he was pursuing a career as a model, his China Black meets Gregory Isaacs style along with some well written lyrics and toe-tapping tunes could well result in Paul seeing a bit more of the microphone and a little less of the catwalk in the future. Most teenage brothers would spend their days fighting over girls, the PlayStation, the TV remote, leftovers in the fridge and just about anything else that wasn’t nailed down. Now I’m not saying that the Brown siblings (Evan and Chris) were any different and don’t enjoy a good ruck like the next guy, or maybe teenagers in Australia are just more chilled out? Whatever these guys were up to in their early adolescent years they obviously had enough energy and time left to channel their creative juices, put their heads together and form Kotadama. Latecomers to the music game, having not picked up an instrument until the age of 18 these self taught musicians from New South Wales are going the right way about making up for lost time. More soft rock than pop the duo provide a melody which incorporates both string and keyboard with a mature vocal performance very much in the vein of Ben’s Brother or maybe a younger and slightly less developed Darren Hayes. Highlights include “The Fallen” with its haunting Celtic undertones and “Walkabout” with its jangly guitar riff suggesting that a young Mr Brown may have been inspired to pick up a guitar by The Edge. A debut album is planned for 2009 which the boys are hoping to back up with a tour. (MC)
